Studying Thoracic Surgery in Canada |
Students start with a foundation in surgery, and then start to take specialized courses in the anatomy and physiology of the lungs, pleural space, and esophagus.
Hands-on exercises include diagnostic imaging of the chest, endoscopy and other minimally invasive procedures, and chest tube placement. More radical procedures such as tumor removal, esophageal surgery, and lung transplantations are reserved for advanced students. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is also taught in certain medical schools.
Students also learn about the pharmacology of drugs commonly used in the management of thoracic diseases. They also learn the principles of oncology, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy, since many cancers occur in and around the chest cavity.
