Studying Theoretical Chemistry in Canada |
Students begin with a suitable background in chemistry and analytical chemistry, where they learn about analytical measurements, sampling and preparation techniques, instrumental methods of analysis including absorption spectrophotometry, molecular fluorimetry, atomic spectrometry, and ion chromatography.
Studies in quantum chemistry include the classical equations of motion and harmonic oscillators. As well, molecular mechanics, quantum mechanics, Schr÷dinger equation and wave functions, quantum numbers, and electronic spectra are all studied.
Students also learn about the methods used in computational chemistry. They study molecular orbital theory of organic and inorganic chemistry, applications of computational chemistry to chemical bonding, molecular spectra, semi-empirical electronic structure theory, and study the comparison of theoretical methods used to obtain molecular properties. Students are also introduced to statistical thermodynamics.
Classroom studies are augmented by computer studies. Students learn how to apply their classroom computational chemistry knowledge by using quantum chemistry software, and the results are applied to problems in molecular structure, thermodynamics, vibrational spectroscopy, and kinetics. The UNIX operating system, Bourse-shell programming, and Python scripting are also introduced.
