As mentioned above, some institutions consider the “technical” theatre program to include design, and thus theatrical design may be a large component of a more broadly focused degree program. Courses deal with the principles and techniques of stage management, as well as aspects of technical production such as the management of time, money, personnel, space and equipment. Scheduling, budgets, contracts, promotion and staffing are all prime concerns, as is the practical side of costume and set construction, makeup, effects, props, sound and lighting for theatre (and sometimes film and television). In addition, a well-rounded theatre degree usually includes courses in the liberal arts and humanities.
