Registered social workers can work in wide variety of human services and community agencies. Social workers employed by child welfare agencies investigate cases of family violence, child abuse, and neglect. They can also recruit foster parents and supervise the placement of children in protective care. Others work on adoption cases.
Social workers can work in hospitals in collaboration with psychiatrists, nurses, and psychologists where they contribute to the treatment and rehabilitation of physically or mentally ill individuals, disabled persons, and the aged. Social workers are also involved in counseling, psychotherapy, and mediation to individuals or groups. In the correctional field, social workers can work in the rehabilitation of young or adult offenders. Others work as probation officers or as parole officers. Many school boards hire social workers to help students adjust to the school environment. They help students, parents and teachers to deal with problems such as aggressive behavior, truancy, and family problems which can affect the students' performance.
Social workers also work in various government agencies where they are involved in policy analysis, policy development, and planning. Academically, social workers can teach social work and other related human services programs at the post-secondary level while doing research.
A degree in social work can be used for a career in law, justice studies, psychology, nursing, and medicine.
