Studying Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Canada

All students take basic anatomy courses and have experience in surgery. Advanced courses are a combination of theory and hands-on practice. Students learn basic plastic surgery techniques (skin grafts, hand fractures, repair of lacerations, burn care, and facial trauma). There is an emphasis on microsurgical techniques and wound suturing.

Students can focus on various body parts, such as head and neck reconstruction (in collaboration with otolaryngologists), hands (in collaboration with orthopedic surgeons), and face. Students can also specialize in reconstructive surgery to repair wounds caused by tumor removal.

Pediatric plastic surgery is another area that students can specialize in. They learn the unique medical issues that face children such as congenital defects (eg. cleft palate), post-operative pain control, and effects of multiple surgeries on children's mental and physical well-being.

A number of seminars in burns, hand surgery, microvascular surgery, maxillo-craniofacial and aesthetic surgery are offered to residents. This allows them to keep abreast of recent advances in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
