Students studying PT learn about the clinical sciences such as the cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular systems. They also learn about biomechanics, neuroanatomy, human growth and development, and the various manifestations of disease. They learn to diagnose patients based on observations and taking personal histories. They also study how to collaborate with patients and family members to determine a plan of care that will be effective for all concerned.
Common PT techniques learned include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy techniques, dispensing of prescriptions, and electrotherapeutic treatments. They also learn about how to teach prevention, health promotion, and fitness to their patients.
Non-PT-specific topics also learned include ethics, professional conduct, business relations, and psychology.
PT curricula include extensive practicum sessions, where students get to apply their classroom learning to real-world situations. Practicum sessions take place in hospitals, private PT clinics, and in laboratories where the student observes a licensed PT clinician in action, and gradually take on duties under the licensed PT's care.
