Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Research Areas and Disciplines |
Research in PMR is grouped into several fields: movement science, occupational science, cognitive science, and rehabilitation technology.
Movement science research focuses on aspects such as learning to walk again after a stroke or severe leg trauma, and swallowing disorders such as those exhibited by people with Parkinson's disease. A major research field within this is spinal cord rehabilitation. Both pure and applied research is ongoing in an attempt to repair injured spinal cords and restore sensation to affected parts of the body.
Occupational science research focuses on issues related to work injury, and an individual's perception regarding their ability to perform work tasks after work-related injury.
Cognitive science research focuses on retraining the brain after injury. Topics such as speech therapy (after a stroke), learning disabilities, and research into Alzheimer's disease are common.
Technology to assist with PMR is also constantly being researched. Devices such as prosthetics, implants, wheelchairs, and wearable sensors are being designed or improved with the aid of clinical research and practical evaluation studies.
