Initial courses focus on a general overview of geology, chemistry, and petroleum engineering. Students learn about the relationships of geology, basic reservoir rock properties, surface and interfacial phenomena, the flow of fluids through porous media, and the classification of oil and natural gas reservoirs. They also learn about the behavior of petroleum reservoir fluids through the algebraic and numerical application of thermodynamic theory.
Courses in the actual drilling of wells are also offered, where they learn about the elements of rock mechanics, drilling fluids, and the factors affecting rate of penetration. They also learn the theory and engineering applications of measurements of physical properties of the formation near the well bore. Students also learn about new techniques in oil recovery (chemical oil recovery methods, polymer flooding, surfactant flooding, alkaline flooding, and thermal methods).
Peripheral courses are also available. Topics include the politics of well drilling, recovery of oil from oil sands, environmental impacts of petroleum engineering, ethics, petroleum law, and the management of oil and natural gas industries.
Laboratory courses are designed to teach the students the practical applications of what they've learned in the classroom. Field trips are also a staple of the petroleum engineering curriculum. Students visit various petroleum installations, industrial plants, and chemical and petroleum laboratories to see and evaluate what happens in the real world, and apply that to their classroom knowledge.
