Most people with a petroleum engineering degree go on to work in private industry. They can work for mining and oil companies in a variety of capacities. They can work in exploration, where they collaborate with geologists and geophysicists in finding new reserves of oil and gas. They make recommendations regarding the best location for drilling a well, collect data as the drilling progresses to determine if the well contains economically feasible amounts, and make decisions regarding appropriate well completion techniques. They can also work with other engineers to develop and construct equipment such as drilling platforms and wells.
Many petroleum engineers initially work in remote field locations overseeing the collection and analysis of oil and gas well data or supervising the installation or operation of facilities. They may also coordinate drilling activities and safety procedures. With experience, most petroleum engineers do the majority of their work in an office environment, specializing in specific areas of petroleum engineering such as exploration, development, drilling, processing, and production.
