What is Pathology and Laboratory Medicine?Pathology (sometimes called laboratory medicine) is the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of human body. This can include tissues, organs, fluids, and the entire body. Medical pathology is divided into two branches: anatomical pathology (diagnosing disease based on the gross and microscopic examination of the body) and clinical pathology (diagnosing disease based on the examination of bodily fluids using chemistry and microbiology).
Pathologists do not usually see patients directly (in contrast to most other medical specialties), but rather serve as consultants to other doctors. Pathologists examine living tissue via biopsies or bodily fluids, or dead tissue via autopsies.
