Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Graduate-level degrees are available to students who already hold a previous undergraduate degree. A previous MD degree is acceptable in most cases. An average of at least B over the last 2 years is required. Previous work experience (co-op, honors, directed studies, etc.) is an asset. Some schools require the student to have written the GRE (graduate record exam) prior to applying for admission (especially for international students). Letters of reference (either relating to the previous undergraduate degree, or from relevant work experience) are necessary for admission to some school's graduate pathology programs.

Admission to a PhD program can either be directly from an undergraduate degree (in addition to already having extensive research experience, and being published in a peer-reviewed journal), or after acquiring a relevant MSc degree.

As all graduate programs require a supervisor, some schools require this person to be approved prior to final admission.

Admission to the MD program is generally contingent on getting a favorable score on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), usually of at least 24. A minimum score of 6 in the Verbal Reasoning component is required. A grade of B is also required in the last 2 years of a previous program. Students currently taking an undergraduate degree are usually eligible for admission to the MD program; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory.

Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
