What is Palliative?Palliative care medicine concentrates on reducing the severity of disease symptoms, rather than halting, delaying, or reversing the progression of a disease or providing a cure. The goal of palliative care medicine is to prevent and relieve suffering and to improve the quality of life for people facing serious illnesses. Hospice care is palliative care for patients at the end of life. Most universities which offer a palliative care medicine program do so within the department of oncology, although other diseases which warrant palliative care include renal failure, chronic heart failure, and certain progressive neurological diseases.
