Studying Palliative in Canada |
Students studying palliative care medicine generally take several courses in philosophy and bioethics, as well as courses in oncology. Students work with multi-disciplinary teams, both at home and in the hospital. They can focus on oncologic or non-oncologic palliative care medicine (although most students study both), and can also specialize in adult or pediatric palliative care.
Treatment skills, communication skills and approaches to ethical decision-making are emphasized in clinical practice. Regular seminars provide opportunities to learn specific theoretical content and to practice skills. Other practical experience includes workshops on assessment and management of pain, nausea, delirium, emergencies in palliative care, and when and how to use palliative sedatives.
