Students taking the research-based MSc degree will take appropriate courses such as physiology and anatomy of the head and neck region. A biostatistics and epidemiology course is recommended. Seminars in recent advances in otolaryngology are also taken, and students undertake an independent research project.
MD students take courses in a variety of specialties, including plastic surgery, emergency room surgery, and respirology. MD students also have regular exposure to head and neck oncology, facial cosmetic surgery, otology, neuro-otology, and pediatric otolaryngology. After the initial theory, students are introduced to actual surgical procedures and methodologies, using animal, computer, and human cadaver models. Techniques such as excision, suturing, ligation, and cautery are taught, with special emphasis on technique around the various orifices of the head.
