Students studying OMS get extensive training in the surgical correction of dentofacial deformities, maxillofacial trauma, maxillofacial pathology, maxillofacial reconstructive surgery, dentoalveolar surgery, implant surgery, and ambulatory anesthesia. They also study dentoalveolar surgery, implantology, orthognathic surgery, temporo-mandibular joint disorders, and pediatric OMS. As well students who wish to specialize in various head cancers can study maxillofacial oncology and microvascular reconstruction. Students study gross anatomy, surgical anatomy, how to take patient history, and how to do a physical diagnosis.
Classroom lecture are supplemented with seminars, pathology conferences, journal club meetings, and case presentations. Students do rotations in different services including plastic surgery, otorhinolarygology, neurosurgery, trauma, anesthesiology, and internal medicine. Students watch OMS procedures and then perform them themselves, under the supervision of licensed OM surgeons.
