Bone disorders such as cleidocranial dysostosis are responsible for phenomena such as supernumerary teeth and permanent teeth not erupting. OMS researchers are working with those in genetics to determine the causes of this disorder. They are also working with those in other dental specialties such as orthodontics and periodontics to induce permanent teeth to erupt and to surgically remove excess teeth.
OMS surgeons are always developing and refining techniques for repairing trauma to the face. Since a cast cannot be placed on fractured facial bones, other means have been developed to stabilize facial fractures. Researchers are using new types of metals and lightweight composite materials to wire jaws together. As well, plates and screws at the involved site are being experimented with to determine if they are more effective, obviating the need for wiring the jaw shut.
Other researchers are focused on the development of therapeutic and regenerative biomaterials to use in trauma, oncology, neurovascular interventions, and hard tissue augmentation. Researchers are examining the fatigue performance of materials, in vitro evaluation of biological performance, as well as in vivo safety and efficacy. This is often in collaboration with those in materials chemistry and chemical engineering; see these articles for more information.
