What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with diseases and surgery of the eye and related systems (eg. brain). Since most ophthalmologists perform surgeries on eyes, they are also known as eye surgeons.

Ophthalmology has many subspecialties to deal with various conditions and diseases of the eye, including cataract surgery, treatment of glaucoma, ocular oncology, ocular plastic surgery, refractive surgery, and pediatric ophthalmology.
