Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Ophthalmology |
Ophthalmology degrees are generally MD's, although the University of Alberta confers graduate MSc and PhD degrees in ophthalmology.
Admission to the University of Alberta's graduate program requires a previous undergraduate degree, with an average of B in the last 2 years of study. Additionally, a CV and letter outlining the student's research interests are required. Previous relevant research (eg. during the previous undergraduate degree) is an asset.
MD degrees and/or residency programs in ophthalmology are offered at almost all medical schools in Canada. Standards for Canadian applicants are usually more relaxed compared to international applicants. Admission to the MD program is generally contingent on getting a favorable score on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test); a score of at least 24 is necessary for admission to ophthalmology. A grade of at least B is also required in the last 2 years of a previous program. Students currently taking an undergraduate degree in any discipline are usually eligible for admission to the MD program in ophthalmology; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
