Employment Resources and Professions Available to Oceanography and Oceanic Sciences Graduates

Most oceanographers work in a research capacity and spend a lot of time on ships. A great deal of time may also be spent in the laboratory interpreting data. They can be employed by various universities where they teach marine science while also doing research.

The principal employer of oceanographers in Canada is the federal government: the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, for physical, chemical and biological oceanographers; and the Department of Natural Resources for marine geologists and geophysicists. Environment Canada and the Department of National Defense will also employ oceanographers for a variety of projects.

The private sector also employs oceanographers, where they work on a contractual arrangement for environmental studies, assessments, and surveys. Mineral resource companies also employ marine scientists to aid in the exploration and mining of commercially valuable minerals.

An oceanography degree can be used to obtain a wide range of jobs in business, education, resource management, environmental science, law, and the Armed Forces.
