Most research into neonatal medicine focuses on improving survival rates in premature and ill infants. This includes improving techniques for mechanical ventilation and avoiding complications of this procedure (such as chronic lung cancer). Corollary to this is the development and improvement of pulmonary surfactant replacement therapy, and it's effects on decreasing chronic lung cancer in patients later on in life.
Improvement of surgical techniques is ongoing, especially since surgery on a newborn is substantially different than on a child or adult. There is also research ongoing into intrauterine surgery of the fetus, in an attempt to increase the rate of survival in infants with congenital or neurological defects.
Other research focuses on various medications and appropriate dosages that are necessary to keep infants alive. Also there is a lot of research into the bioethics of keeping the extremely premature infant alive, answering questions regarding quality-of-life issues for both the infant and the family.
