Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Neonatal |
Dalhousie University, the University of Alberta, and the University of Saskatchewan all offer MD programs in neonatal medicine. The University of Alberta also offers research-based graduate programs in pediatrics.
Admission to the University of Alberta's graduate program requires completion of a four-year undergraduate degree, with an average of at least B. Three letters of reference are also required.
At least 3 years of a previous undergraduate degree is required for admission to the MD program. Full completion of the previous degree may be necessary. Some schools require an average of at least B in the previous degree (and of course, the higher the average, the better). Completion of relevant courses such as biology or chemistry is considered an asset, rounded out with several humanities and social sciences courses. Additionally, the MCAT (medical college admission test) must be written for admission to most schools.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
