Music Therapy Research Areas and Disciplines |
Research in music therapy generally revolves around using various music therapies for various at-risk groups. For example, many researchers are studying the effects of music therapy on the elderly to prolong life, improve the quality of life, and combat medical illnesses such as Parkinson's disease, cancer, strokes, and the like.
Other researchers are focusing in the mechanics of music and how it affects the human brain. They are studying the effects of various tones, frequencies, and type of music on physiological function (eg. faster music encouraging exercise and movement in general). These people are collaborating with those in cognitive science and neurology to determine which parts of the brain process music, and hope to apply this knowledge to those with brain injuries.
