All students, after the prerequisite introductory courses, take studies in cell biology. They learn about cell regulation and the structure and function of biomolecules. This includes the structure, function, and properties of molecules relevant to biological processes in cells. Students allso learn about the structure of nucleic acids, the nature of genetic information, and the molecular basis of replication, transcription, and translation.
Given that many molecular biologists use bioinformatics as a tool, most programs include this. Students learn about the techniques and methods of basic computer analysis of sequence data, including alignment, databases, and phylogenetic reconstruction.
Genetic studies are also part of the molecular biology programme. Students learn about the molecular genetic of both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, with a focus on the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication, DNA repair and recombination, the cell cycle and cancer, and of telomeres and telomerase. They also learn about the molecular genetics of bacteria and bacteriophages.
Laboratory studies are designed to teach students to examine how genes and proteins interact in cells, and how cells interact to form organisms. They also learn how cell and molecular biology research is conducted, and receive training in advanced microscopy, molecular biology and computer analysis.
