Most midwives in Canada work in private homes where they assist women during pregnancy, birth, and up to 6 weeks post-partum. In urban areas, they may also assist in clinics and hospitals. In remote or northern areas, they are often on their own. Midwives often have privileges at their local hospital, where they work with support from obstetrical nurses and other health professionals. At home births they usually work in teams of two midwives.
A degree in midwifery is useful for entry to programs such as nursing, social work, and pediatric medicine.
