Prerequisites Needed to Study Medical Laboratory in Canada |
Many schools offer certificates or diplomas in medical laboratory science (MLS), ML technology, ML technician, or ML assistant. High school completion with a C average is usually required with courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. As the field is quite competitive and enrollment is limited, most schools also require a letter of intent or other essay-type request for admission.
Undergraduate degrees are also available in MLS: either a BSc or Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science. To gain admission to these programs you need high school completion with at least a B+ average: biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Some schools require a pre-professional year of undergraduate study before transferring into the MLS program, during which you must pass courses in microbiology, organic chemistry, cell biology, and statistics. In some cases a prior certificate or diploma in MLS will also suit.
