Studying Materials Science and Engineering in Canada

As materials engineers are responsible for transforming materials into usable products, they must have a strong background in chemistry and applied physics. They learn how to analyze chemical compositions of materials. Introductory courses include materials properties and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and chemical reactions.

More advanced topics in data analysis, chemical engineering, and process analysis are available. Students learn how to analyze and use the data that is created. As materials engineering involves the manipulation of matter, laboratory techniques in chemistry and physics are emphasized.

Students also learn how to create new materials with usable properties. They learn various chemical and physical processes whereby to accomplish this, and also how to test for reliability, stability, safety, and user-friendly-ness.

Students also learn how to manipulate non-metallurgical materials such as ceramics, polymers, and biomaterials. They learn how these materials differ from metals, their specific properties, and uses for these materials in industries such as aerospace and biotechnology.
