Interior design students pursue courses in the history, influence, theory and practice of the profession, from basic principles to the production of finished projects. Students learn about the development of architectural space, the analysis and application of colours, patterns, textures and finishes, fixtures and equipment specifications, furnishings, lighting, and considerations of functionality and beauty in designing human environments. They become proficient in computerized tools such as CAD programs and digital imaging technology, and may be exposed to business principles in order to enhance their professional marketability. Interior design students are taught to consider the human factor in their work, including issues of diversity, colour psychology, social responsibility, and the influence of environment on behaviour. As preparation for a career in the field, work internships are usually an important part of one’s degree work.
