Students take requisite courses in microbiology, biochemistry, mycology, parasitology, epidemiology, immunology, and virology. Specialized courses in HIV, bone marrow and solid organ transplantation, neurology, tuberculosis, tropical diseases, and infections in injection drug users are offered. Students can also specialize in pediatric infectious diseases.
Seminars in infectious diseases are offered on a regular basis, and keep students apprised of recent advances in infectology, new methodologies, and results of clinical trials for various infectious diseases.
Practical training includes seeing patients with various infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, HIV, or STI's, diagnosing the disease, and setting a course of treatment or management. Laboratory techniques such as microbial culture, microscopy (light and electron), biochemical testing, and molecular diagnostics (eg. PCR) are taught.
