Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Infectious Diseases |
Most schools offer an MD in infectious diseases through their internal medicine department. However, the University of Alberta also offers a graduate degree (MSc and PhD) in experimental (research-based) infectious diseases, in addition to their MD programs.
Admission to the University of Alberta's graduate program is restricted to students with at least a B+ average in a previous undergraduate degree in a relevant field. A GRE (graduate record examination) score of at least 75% is required from international students.
Admission to an MD program is generally contingent on getting a favorable score on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test); a score of at least 24 is necessary for admission to geriatrics. A grade of at least B is also required in the last 2 years of a previous program. Students currently taking an undergraduate degree in any discipline are usually eligible for admission to the MD program in geriatrics; in some cases full completion of the previous degree is mandatory.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
