Horticulture and Horticultural Research Areas and Disciplines

A hot field in horticulture is Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is intended to combat the proliferation of weeds and pests in gardens, orchards, and ground crops. The adoption of this technology also eases the reliance on chemical controls and contributes to sustainable horticultural and agricultural practices. For example, IPM is being used to enhance cranberry and blueberry production in the Maritimes by avoiding the use of chemical pesticides and resulting in organic-certified products. Rather, biological controls such as predatory insects and naturally occurring fungi are being used to control pests.

Turfgrass science is also being researched. Many golf courses and lawn owners have issues with irrigation, so there are studies underway to create more efficient irrigation systems. As well, there are studies ongoing into the water quality of golf course irrigation systems, with the aim of keeping harmful chemicals out of the groundwater.

The tree fruit industry is also doing a lot of horticultural research. For example, scientists are studying the development of health food ingredients for bakery products. As well, natural antioxidants are being genetically engineered into foods such as apples and plums. As well, natural antimicrobials for extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables are being developed as an alternative to chemical anti-spoilage applications.

Horticulturists also work with agricultural scientists to develop better ways to fertilize crops: improving accuracy when spraying crops, and applying remote sensing tools for more efficient fertilizing are two areas of research being conducted by Canadian horticulturists.
