Geotechnical Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines |
Theoretical research in geotechnical engineering includes the study of the mechanics of various particles and general soil characterization. This includes soil particles and also particles of manmade materials such as concrete. Related to this is the study of the flow of fluids through porous media such as sand. Much of this research is undertaken in collaboration with government and in university-industry partnerships.
Practical applications of geotechnical engineering include studying the types of foundations that are necessary to support planned structures, and relating them to the environmental conditions of the area. For example, current studies are underway to develop building practices in the Canadian Arctic that take into account the presence of permafrost, and the effects of frost heaving in general.
Geotechnical engineers will also perform geotechnical investigations to obtain information on the physical properties of soil and rock underlying a site. They then design earthworks and foundations for proposed structures, and determine methods for repair to earthworks and structures caused by subsurface conditions. Subsurface exploration involves soil sampling and laboratory analysis of the samples retrieved.
The production of geosynthetics is a new area of research. This involves the design of materials that aid in certain geotechnical problems. New materials being designed and tested include geotextiles, geogrids, geomembranes, and geocomposites. Depending on the environment (roads, airfields, railroads, retaining structures, dams, landfills, etc.) they can help to stabilize the underlying geology of an area and allow for infrastructure that would otherwise not be suitable.
