What is Gender and Women's Studies?Women and gender studies (WGS) explores societal norms of gender, race, class, sexuality, and other social inequalities. Gender, as an analytical concept, has its roots in women's studies; it also examines recent developments in areas of masculinity and queer studies. Women's studies specifically focuses on politics, society, and history from a women's perspective. Most schools link both concept together, while some maintain separate women's studies and gender studies programs.
WGS is often linked with equity studies and human rights, and many schools cross-pollinate between these disciplines. However equity studies focuses more on issues not necessarily related to gender, but to issues such as class and ethnicity.
WGS is also linked with sexual diversity studies, but is of a more general nature whereas sexual diversity studies focuses more on sexuality. For instance, WGS may study issues such as feminist writings and how gender relations can affect economic development.
