Studying Evolutionary Biology in Canada |
Students wanting to specialize in evolutionary biology will first take courses in zoology, botany, and microbiology, in order to get an understanding of the various types of organisms. They take courses in anatomy and physiology where they learn about body morphology, how they differ amongst closely related organisms, and apply these principles to evolution.
Advanced courses include microbial genetics, physiology and behavior, spatial dispersal patterns, and developmental biology. They learn about population biology and population genetics, genetic manipulation, the mechanics of speciation, and laboratory techniques in molecular ecology and systematics. Students also look at the various mechanisms of evolution, how these mechanisms work, and how change is measured. They also learn to measure evolutionary change through comparisons with the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, understand the process of change through Game Theory, and interpret and classify changes by creating phylogenies.
In addition to a grounding in theory, students also get practical experience. This includes skills in laboratory and fieldwork, computers, and communications.
