Environmental Chemistry Research Areas and Disciplines |
Research in environmental chemistry addresses issues such as site and water contamination by mercury and other heavy metals, organic pollutants and pharmaceutical residues, widespread atmospheric pollutants, and modeling and predicting contaminant impacts.
Researchers are applying biotechnology methods such as bioremediation and phytoremediation for the treatment of contaminated soils. This includes heavy metal contamination of land by industry, nutrients leaching from agricultural land into waterways, and urban runoff of pollutants washing off roads and parking lots. For example, new bacteria have been bioengineered that can ingest and metabolize petroleum, and this is being used to clean up spills on coastlines and also at the source.
Environmental chemists are also working with engineers and chemists to develop new fuel cells for automobiles and determining what their impacts will be on the environment now and also in the future. As well, alternative and reformulated fuels for diesel engines is another focus. Researchers are working on pollution control via NOx reduction, the characterization of diesel soot, and hydrogen-assisted combustion.
