Students specializing in endocrinology will learn the physiology and anatomy of the various endocrine organs. Subsequent courses in metabolism, biochemistry of hormones, and especially diabetes is standard.
Reflecting the predominantly outpatient nature of the practice of endocrinology, practical emphasis is placed on experience in the ambulatory care setting. Through clinics, students are exposed to a wide variety of clinical problems in diabetes and general endocrinology. They are also exposed to topics such as osteoporosis and thyroid cancer. Additional rotations provide a focused exposure to pediatric endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, community endocrinology and the clinical endocrine laboratory. Electives include endocrine surgery (observing surgeries for thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease), diabetes and pregnancy, endocrine ophthalmology, and endocrine oncology (thyroid cancer, neuroendocrine tumors).
