Prerequisites for Graduate Studies in Endocrinology and Metabolism |
Most schools offer an MD degree in endocrinology, although the University of Alberta also offers graduate (MSc and PhD) degrees in endocrinology.
Admission to a graduate program requires the completion of a previous undergraduate degree, with an average of B over the last 2 years. Preference for admission is to degree-holders in the fields of biology or biochemistry, or students with a previous MD degree. Previous work-related experience is considered an asset. Having a supervisor already chosen at the time of application is more likely to result in admission to a graduate program.
At least 3 years of a previous undergraduate degree is required for admission to the MD program. Completion of a previous degree is an asset. Some schools require an average of at least B in the previous degree (and of course, the higher the average, the better). Completion of relevant courses such as biology or chemistry is considered an asset, rounded out with several humanities and social sciences courses.
Additionally, the MCAT (medical college admission test) must be written for admission to most schools. A score of at least 27 is considered an asset for admission.
Generally, students who are in their final year of medical training are automatically eligible for residency training.
