Dermatology Research Areas and Disciplines |
Research in dermatology has a large focus on the various skin cancers and melanomas: early diagnosis, treatment, surgery, non-surgical therapies, and prevention. There is a lot of funding available for cancer research; thus most universities with a dermatology department usually have several staff who specialize in skin cancer research.
A new emerging field in dermatology is that of cosmetic dermatology. Research into effects of Botox usage, laser surgical techniques, and other minimally invasive procedures are continually being updated. Research into hair loss and regrowth is another hot research topic. Causes behind baldness, prevention, and treatments are ongoing. Much research into baldness is interdisciplinary with genetics (eg. finding the bald gene and turning it off).
Some dermatologists can focus on pure research such as infectious diseases of the skin, such as lupus or leprosy. They can study how these diseases are spread, how it manifests, treatment protocols, and preventative measures.
