Studying Critical Care in Canada |
Students in critical care medicine will take anatomy and physiology as prerequisites for specialized courses. More advanced courses such as studies of the various organ systems, infectious diseases, types of trauma, and various useful medications are offered.
Non-science skills that students learn include psychology, sociology, and clinical skills, designed to teach the student a patient-doctor relationship, and also to prepare them for the stresses of working with critically-ill patients. As critical care can result in patient death often, training in preparing the patient and the family for this eventuality is offered, and courses in ethics and palliative care are recommended.
The last years of the MD are spent in practical applications where rotations are spent in disciplines related to critical care medicine (detecting and managing respiratory distress, hypotension, heart problems, hemorrhaging, infectious disease, renal failure, etc.). Students gather data on patients, do physical examinations, determine when critical care measures are required, diagnose problems, and offer various therapies (surgical and non-surgical).
