Most people with a degree in critical care medicine go on to become clinical doctors in a hospital or clinic, where they can work in the emergency department, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the intensive care unit (ICU), or wherever their services are required. They can also obtain work as a paramedic, as they are often first on the scene of an accident or illness requiring immediate lift support treatment.
Intensivists can also work in elderly care homes, as this group of people is most likely to require the services of a critical care worker. They can also work as registered nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and spiritual care providers. These people often work in an interdisciplinary environment, collaborating with universities, research centers, and hospitals, to also perform pure research in addition to clinical care.
