Most control engineering programs are taught in conjunction with mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering, and as such, students learn about those subjects (see articles on relevant subjects). Core courses in control engineering include control theory, systems control, linear control, and nonlinear control. Students learn how to analyze how a system changes over time, and how to engineer desired responses with respect to those changes (eg. how to calculate aircraft mass over time as it loses fuel to combustion).
More advanced subjects include control strategies such as robust control (maintaining stability), process control, intelligent control (eg. using neural networks or algorithms), and adaptive control. Students learn how to control power in closed systems, how to manipulate such systems from the outside, and how to design control devices such as hydraulics and pneumatics.
