Condensed Matter Physics Research Areas and Disciplines

A lot of today's condensed matter physics is directed toward creating new classes of artificially structured materials. For example, researchers are working to design thin ferromagnetic films, which will enable more data to be stored on computer hard drives. With some current drives, as the density of data increases, the superparamagnetic limit is reached and data is lost. Scientists are determining what properties of the thin films are needed to prevent this from occurring. They are using nuclear techniques (neutron diffraction, M÷ssbauer spectroscopy and pulsed NMR) and atomic techniques (magnetometry, thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction) to investigate the intrinsic magnetic structures formed by the rare-earth and transition elements.

Researchers are designing liquid crystals with properties intermediate between those of solids and liquids. They are important for technological applications such as display devices, and layered liquid crystalline structures are relevant to biological research on lipid bilayers. A current area of research in liquid crystals is how their molecular structure influences their observed macroscopic behavior.

Superconductor research is always ongoing. For instance, it was thought that superconductors would work only at temperatures far below freezing. Recently however, scientists have discovered several compounds that superconduct at much higher temperatures. In principle, a room-temperature superconductor could allow electricity to travel with zero energy loss from power plants to houses, and cell phone towers that could handle many cell phone carriers in high-population areas.
