Prerequisites Needed to Study Biotechnology in Canada |
Many schools offer certificates and diplomas (2 and 3 year) in biotechnology as a biotechnology technologist. High school completion is required with English, mathematics, biology and chemistry, with a least a C average. Some certificates are essentially a practicum (1 year), and assume a post-secondary background in biology or other life sciences. In those cases a previous undergraduate degree is required for admission to these 1-year practicum certificates.
Admission to an undergraduate BSc program in biotechnology is contingent on completion of high school with English, biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Generally, a minimum grade of C must be maintained in order to continue with a major or honors degree in biotechnology.
Some schools offer a minor program in biotechnology while a student is otherwise majoring in another subject. Minors in biotechnology usually don't have specific admission requirements that haven't already been fulfilled by the major-subject requirements, but a background in biology or chemistry is useful.
