Jack Layton to Speak at Saint Mary's

Jack Layton, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), will be speaking at Saint Mary’s next week, and his talk is expected to attract a large number of faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the University.

This event, which is being organized by the Young New Democrats Society at Saint Mary’s, will be held at 5:00 PM on Thursday, September 15 in the Scotiabank Conference Theatre, Sobey Building. The event is free, however organizers advise that those wishing to attend arrive early as seating will be limited.

Born in Montreal, Layton grew up in the small community of Hudson, Quebec and attended McGill University in Montreal. He moved to Toronto to complete his studies, obtaining a PhD from York University. His professional life started as a university professor at Ryerson in 1974 and he remains an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto.

He was first elected to Toronto City Council in 1982 and was re-elected five times, stepping down shortly after being elected leader of Canada's NDP in January 2003.

Over the years, he has become widely known for bringing innovative solutions to social, environmental and economic challenges that have faced our nation. Among his accomplishments are helping to build Canada's first urban wind turbine, pioneering an innovative program to create jobs and cut pollution by retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency - paid for through future energy savings - and developing a response to the AIDS crisis that's now in place across Canada.

Saint Mary's University is known for its community outreach projects, both in Canada and around the world. Saint Mary's, founded in 1802, is home to one of Canada's leading business schools, a Science Faculty widely known for its cutting-edge research, a comprehensive and innovative Arts Faculty and a new Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
