Provinces Cleared to Sue Tobacco Giants

London, ON. - The Department of Communications & Public Affairs at The University of Western Ontario is providing the following contact to assist those covering the recent decision of the Supreme Court of Canada which allows the provinces to sue tobacco companies to recover tobacco-related health costs.

  • Professor Robert Solomon, of Western's Faculty of Law, says "This decision represents a major victory for public health. It clears the way for the provinces to recoup from tobacco manufacturers the staggering health costs that their products impose on society."

Robert Solomon's primary areas of teaching are tort law, healthcare law and policy, and alcohol and drug law. He has published extensively in these fields, served as a consultant to various federal and provincial agencies, and traveled widely in North America and Australia as a lecturer. Professor Solomon served on the Board of Directors of the Addiction Research Foundation of Ontario, and is currently the National Director of Legal Policy for Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD) Canada.

Robert Solomon can be reached for comment at (519) 661-3603 (office).

Media contact: Becky Bannerman, Communications Officer, Faculty of Law,
    (519) 661-2126.
