September 28, 2005 Source: University of Calgary: http://www.ucalgary.ca/news/sept05/evacuation-update.html UPDATE: Health Sciences Centre evacuation update A research associate in a laboratory in the basement of the Health Sciences Centre spilled approximately 5 litres of a chemical that has since been determined by the Calgary Fire Department Hazardous Materials team to be a dilute formaldehyde solution. The research associate suffered minor irritations to her eyes and throat, and after being assessed at Foothills Hospital, she was sent home this afternoon. The laboratory supervisor has spoken with the research associate on the phone this evening, and is happy to report that she is at home and feeling well. The University of Calgary's standard evacuation procedures were implemented. When Campus Security initially received the call from the laboratory about this chemical spill, the fire prevention officer advised the caller to pull the fire alarm to ensure evacuation of the building. "Of course our first priority is always for the safety and security of our employees, and our neighbours in the Foothills Complex," says Sokol. "We appreciate the prompt response of the Calgary Fire, Police and EMS in working with our own Campus Security and Safety teams." Pamela Sokol, PhD, Vice Dean, University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine
