McLachlan Memorial Lecture (Sydney, NS) - The James Bryson McLachlan Commemorative Society and the Department of History and Fine Arts, Cape Breton University issue an invitation to trade unionists and the community to the 7th Annual J.B. McLachlan Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, October 5 at 2:00 p.m. New Waterford native Del Muise, Professor of History at Carleton University in Ottawa will give this year¡¯s lecture which takes place in CE258 (Royal Bank Lecture Theatre), Cape Breton University. (no admission fee) Muise¡¯s topic: ¡°Where are the Workers?¡± will discuss how contemporary public history in Museums, on the Web and at other public history sites deal with or fail to deal with the world of work and the experience of workers and their organizations. Muise has developed the masters program in Public History at Carleton University. His current focus is the politics of public memory in connection with Canada: A People's History. He is working on a proposal for a comparative examination of the impact of federalism on museum reflections of national identity. He has a continuing interest in heritage issues within Canada, particularly as related to museum policy over the past two decades, but also in the broader area of "Uses of the Past" for political and other objectives. The lecture series is in memory of one of Cape Breton¡¯s finest labour leaders, Jim McLachlan. He arrived in Cape Breton from Scotland in 1902 to work in the expanding coal industry. In 1909 he was elected Secretary-Treasurer of District 26, United Mineworkers of America and was blacklisted. An exceptional organizer and a dedicated radical, he continued his role as a powerful and critical voice in Cape Breton şu and Canada şu until he died in 1937.
