At the start of the convocation ceremony on Thursday, October 6 at 9:45 a.m., the Honourable Lance Finch, Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of British Columbia will administer the pledge of office and install Brandt Louie as SFU's chancellor. Louie is president and CEO of BC's fourth largest company, H.Y. Louie Co. Ltd. He has been a member of SFU's board of governors for five years. former board chair and chair of SFU's capital campaign. The chancellor serves as chair of convocation, a member of senate and the board of governors, and confers all degrees. Following the installation, degrees will be conferred by the faculty of arts and social sciences. An honorary doctor of laws will be conferred on retired Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire, who served for 35 years with the Canadian Armed Forces and was the decorated commander general of the UN peacekeeping mission in Rwanda. On Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., degrees will be conferred by the faculties of applied sciences and science. An honorary doctor of science will be conferred on chemist, fine art dealer and philanthropist Dr. Alfred Bader, co-founder of Sigma-Aldrich, the world's largest supplier of research chemicals. On Friday, October 7 at 9:45 a.m., degrees will be conferred by the faculties of arts and social sciences (general studies) and business. An honorary doctor of laws will be conferred on Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, who is widely respected for his work with international agencies in promoting poverty reduction, disease control and debt reduction of poor countries. On Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., degrees will be conferred by the faculty of education. Certificates and diplomas in all faculties will also be conferred. An honorary doctor of laws will be conferred on Dr. Allan Luke, head of the centre for research in pedagogy and practice in Singapore, an international scholar and leader in the advancement of human rights globally through his work in educational methodology. More than 1,700 students are eligible for graduation this fall, while another 900 have earned certificates or diplomas. -30-
