Major grant awarded for uOttawa innovative alliance project

OTTAWA, September 21, 2005 — Thanks to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) an alliance of Ottawa-Gatineau area post-secondary institutions will work together to increase the community’s capacity for innovation, competitiveness and wealth creation. It is one of sixteen group projects being funded by the Intellectual Property Mobilization Program.

Led by the University of Ottawa the Ottawa-Gatineau University-College Regional Innovation Alliance represents the first step in a plan to develop stronger linkages with the many local organizations and groups that support innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization.

“The Ottawa-Gatineau University-College Regional Innovation Alliance is an excellent example of what we are trying to achieve with the tri-agency Intellectual Property Mobilization program," said Janet Walden, NSERC Vice-President for Research Partnerships Programs. "This is a concerted effort among academic institutions in the National Capital region to increase the commercialization of research in the region through the effective sharing of resources to manage and protect intellectual property, to encourage entrepreneurship and make industry more aware of the knowledge and technology resources at their disposal."

Six area institutions will participate in this innovative project: the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Algonquin College and Universite du Quebec en Outaouais, in partnership with CEGEP de l’Outaouais and La Cite Collegiale. They will share best practices in technology transfer and work to expand the networks of “people” contacts between institutions for the benefit of all. They will also work to build linkages among all the more than twenty “player” organizations that make up the community’s regional innovation ecosystem.

“This program will expand the breadth and quality of linkages between the members of the Innovation Alliance and the community’s innovation network to align the Innovation Alliance with regional strengths and capabilities to improve knowledge and technology transfer,” Howard Alper, uOttawa Vice-President, Research. “This exciting collaborative project enables us to explore to impact of building stronger linkages to the local business community.”

The objective of the Intellectual Property Mobilization (IPM) program is to accelerate the transfer of knowledge and technology residing in Canadian universities, hospitals and colleges for the benefit of Canada. The ultimate goal is to contribute to strengthening Canada’s competitiveness in a knowledge-based global economy.
