The facility, located in the Morisset Library at the University of Ottawa, will give researchers access to major longitudinal studies such as the National Population Health Survey, the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, the General Social Survey, the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada and the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics. In the past, Ottawa-area researchers had access to these data only if they traveled to RDCs in other cities or made special arrangements with Statistics Canada. "The COOL RDC will greatly facilitate the access of researchers to detailed Statistics Canada survey data while at the same time respecting the privacy of survey respondents,” says Saul Schwartz, Director of COOL RDC and Professor in Carleton’s School of Public Policy and Administration. Researchers wishing to access the data must follow a strict protocol. Their research proposals must be approved by a Statistics Canada/Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) committee and by the COOL RDC. Data are stored on a secure, internal server and researchers must work in a specially-built research area. “We’re glad to work together with our colleagues at the University of Ottawa, at the Université du Québec en Outaouais and in area non-governmental organizations,” says Schwartz. “The result will be fruitful collaborations among those analyzing these important datasets.” COOL RDC is a joint initiative by Carleton, the University of Ottawa, and the Université du Québec en Outaouais. It has joined the network of 13 RDCs located across Canada, all of which work in collaboration with Statistics Canada and SSHRC.
