Naylor is being recognized for his work as chair of the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health. The report produced by his committee led to the establishment in 2004 of the Public Health Agency of Canada, a central authority charged with providing leadership and action on public health matters, including national disease outbreaks. The Defries Award is presented to CPHA members who have made outstanding contributions in the broad field of public health. It is named for Dr. Robert Davies Defries, a pioneer in public health education, research and policy who was the first editor of the Canadian Journal of Public Health and the first graduate of U of T’s hygiene (public health) program. “I am honoured to be named the recipient of an award so rich in public health tradition,” Naylor said. “The Defries Award recognizes the outstanding work done by all the members of the National Advisory Committee on SARS, as well as the valiant efforts of numerous health professionals in containing the outbreak of a potentially devastating disease.”
